Years ago, I read a fascinating book by Ralph Keyes titled “The Courage to Write”.
This is the kind of book that every aspiring writer should read at least seven times.
That’s because publishing your work is scary on every level. Here are three reasons why.
Reason 1: The fear of rejection is amplified.
Not everyone will like what you have to say, and that’s a fact.
Also, it’s a fact that not everyone who likes what you have to say will compliment you.
Statistically, people who disagree with you (or simply want to insult you and show how they are better than anyone else) are more likely to comment.
This is a normal occurrence for everyone. But of course, if you are starting your journey in writing, this is going to hurt and will take a while to grow thicker skin and become resistant to such rejection.
Reason 2: It makes you feel more vulnerable.
Be it fiction or non-fiction, your writing will always include something personal.
This is like getting naked in front of an audience. It’s uncomfortable. It makes you feel vulnerable.
And that vulnerability is out there for anyone to see.
And while most people will quietly appreciate it, some will try to take advantage of it.
Reason 3: You lose control of the message.
Once you put something out there, it stays there. You might not be able to change or control it.
People will interpret it as they see fit. They sometimes misunderstand or construct theories out of thin air.
Overall, publishing can be intimidating, which is why most people don’t do it. But the more you write online, the less fear will be able to stop you.
