Want to become a better storyteller for business, for art, or simply for fun?
Storytelling is a skill, and like any skill, anyone can learn it.
Here are 7 ways to start:
1: Read Widely.
Immerse yourself in different genres and styles.
You don’t need to read too many things. Pick your favorite authors and analyze how they structure their stories, develop characters, and create worlds.
2: Observe.
Pay attention to the world around you.
People, places, and events can be inspiration for your stories. Most of the classic novels come from real world inspirations.
3: Write and Tell Stories Regularly.
Practice is what improves your skills.
Set aside time to write every day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes.
And if you don’t like writing, take out a recorder and start telling stories outloud.
4: Join a Writing Group or an Improv Class.
Experiment and get feedback on your work.
Share your stories with others and learn from their perspectives.
Challenge yourself and learn by observation.
5: Study Story Theory.
Understand the building blocks of storytelling.
Learn about plot, character, settings, world building, tropes and theme.
6: Tell Stories to Others.
Writing stories and telling them are 2 different skills.
Practice sharing your stories with others. This helps you refine your delivery and timing.
7: Learn from the Masters.
Study classic stories and analyze what makes them great.
There’s a reason while certain classics are able to stand the test of time…
