The best way to train your storytelling skills is with other people.
But what if you can’t find anyone to help you?
Here’s how to train your storytelling skills by yourself (Tip 5 is my new favourite)
Tip 1: Immerse yourself in stories.
Consume stories in different genres and styles.
Books, comics, audiobooks, story-driven videogames…
Try as many different mediums as possible.
Tip 2: Write Daily.
Even better, publish daily.
I’ve been doing it for a while now, and I can tell you, this is an amazing way to gain mental clarity.
Plus you are training your skills while building an audience.
Tip 3: Avoid AI.
Yes, I don’t like AI and I consider it more harmful than useful.
Don’t be tempted to get feedback for your stories from AI.
Remember that AI is a glorified, emotionless word processor that cannot replace human empathy and understanding.
Tip 4: Study Character.
Why certain characters are so memorable than others?
Analyze them, dig deeper and understand as much as you can from each of them.
Tip 5: Solo TTRPG.
Recently I discovered Mythic by Word Mill Games.
This isn’t just a great tool for playing tabletop RPGs, but also for writers.
I’ve been experimenting with it and it’s definitely my new favorite.
Tip 6: TV Tropes.
Such an amazing site.
Tropes and archetypes are there for a reason: they work!
TV Tropes is the best site for any storyteller who wants to create memorable stories with the right elements.
Tip 7: Rory’s Story Cubes.
Create a story but, every time you are stuck, roll a random Story Cube.
From there, improvise until you are stuck again.
Keep going like this…
